An OpenRouter 429 error means a request encountered a rate restriction. Identify the applicable limit, reduce unnecessary concurrency and retry only under controlled conditions. An immediate, unlimited retry loop adds traffic precisely when it should be reduced. The relevant rules depend on the product, model and current account access.

## Capture one useful failure record

Save the time, HTTP status, safe error fields, selected model and operation identifier when available. OpenRouter documents 429 and a possible `Retry-After` header. A complete credential or private user document is unnecessary for diagnosing the limit and should not enter a shared report.

Confirm which component generated the response. Your own backend or gateway can return the same status before OpenRouter receives anything. Compare adjacent logs and the real request chain instead of identifying the source from a message displayed in the browser.

## Check the current usage pattern

Inspect how many jobs, browser sessions and background workers share the same access. A small request from one user may coincide with a batch from another. Distinguish account restrictions, key-level controls and provider or model conditions rather than attributing every limit to GPU capacity.

Free-model rules require particular care because published conditions can change. Check the current official limits instead of copying old request counts. Creating another key does not, by itself, increase the overall frequency available to the account. Preserve the measured schedule and relevant access state in the incident record.

## Apply a bounded retry policy

| Situation | Appropriate next action |
| --- | --- |
| Short traffic burst | Reduce concurrent calls and retain a bounded queue |
| Repeated limit for the chosen mode | Review scheduling and eligible routes |
| User task deadline reached | End with an explicit failure state |
| Unclear source of 429 | Correlate logs across the request chain |

Where supplied, respect `Retry-After`. Also impose a total task deadline and maximum attempt count. Avoid synchronized workers retrying together. A retry should remain associated with the original application task so additional attempts and any completed work can be reconciled.

## Verify recovery before increasing traffic

Repeat one permitted request after the appropriate delay, then restore load gradually. Record whether success followed reduced concurrency, a reset period or a configuration change. Test that the queue stays within its limit and that an expired task is not revived silently by a background retry.

A 429 does not establish a need to purchase a new GPU: the restriction may arise from access policy or client behavior. That supports a capacity discussion while keeping API limits separate from a verified shortage of working inference replicas.
