An OpenRouter-related 404 requires checking which resource the application requested. It may be an incorrect HTTP path, a stale model identifier or a route on your own backend. The status alone does not show that the entire service is unavailable or that a GPU provider has disappeared.

## Identify the responding component

Record the final URL, HTTP method, safe response fields and the layer producing them. An SDK may append its own operation path, while a direct HTTP call needs the complete endpoint. A proxy can also expose one local route and forward to another external address.

Inspect the actual outgoing request rather than a settings label. A duplicated `/api/v1` segment after changing a client is a different problem from a model ID rejected at a valid endpoint. Do not replace a credential or restart GPU infrastructure before resolving which boundary returned the error.

## Verify the model identifier

Use the current catalog and the exact identifier required by the selected route. A friendly label in a user interface may differ from the value sent in the `model` field. Old application aliases can remain in configuration after a deployment or model update.

Save the identifier and relevant catalog information with the working recipe. A previous successful request to a similarly named model is not evidence that the current request uses the same resource. Check any gateway mapping independently, especially when the gateway rewrites model names before forwarding them.

## Distinguish path and protocol mistakes

| Check | Example of an issue found |
| --- | --- |
| Final URL | A duplicated base path after a client update |
| Selected operation | A Responses body sent to a different route |
| Model identifier | An obsolete internal alias in the payload |
| Response source | The website backend returns 404 before an external call |

Read the documented typed error and safe metadata where present. A status without its body can conceal an error transformed by an intermediary. Missing-resource handling also differs from a permission refusal; preserve the distinction instead of presenting every failure as model unavailability.

## Repeat a controlled request and prevent recurrence

Use one short, authorized request with a checked model and a small output limit. Compare the direct permitted boundary and the application's intended route if needed. Keep other settings unchanged so the successful correction has a clear cause. Record the final client version, operation and model ID.

Add this request to the deployment acceptance procedure and retest after client or routing changes. For infrastructure planning, a routing error is separate from available GPU memory. That makes the next discussion about actual compute preparation rather than an unexplained HTTP status.
