NVIDIA Tesla M40 is assessed here as an exact Maxwell board configuration. Its published 12/24 GB capacity is the starting point for a workload qualification, not a measured serving or rendering result.

## Exact model and memory variants

M40 has12 GB and 24 GB GDDR5 Maxwell variants with 250 W board specifications. The larger capacity does not change architecture or provide modern engine support automatically.

| Variant | Memory | Published board power | Cooling / format |
|---|---|---|---|
| M40 12 GB | 12 GB GDDR5 | 250 W | Passive; PCIe server card |
| M40 24 GB | 24 GB GDDR5 | 250 W | Passive; PCIe server card |

## LLM backend and memory budget

Maxwell is below the current vLLM floor. For GGUF, validate an explicitly compatible CUDA12.x-era build with retained settings and required kernels. A similar application interface does not justify replacing it with CUDA13.

The current vLLM requirement is compute capability7.5 or higher; this architecture is below that floor.

Compatibility evidence: [llama.cpp CUDA build configuration](https://github.com/ggml-org/llama.cpp/blob/master/ggml/src/ggml-cuda/CMakeLists.txt) and the [NVIDIA architecture matrix](https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/tesla/drivers/cuda-toolkit-driver-and-architecture-matrix.html).

## Cycles and batch rendering

For Cycles, independently validate backend and complete scene on a compatible driver. Maxwell has no RTX RT cores; GPU OIDN has a higher architecture requirement than rendering itself.

## Integration into a server or workstation

Inspect the installed memory variant directly and retain passive-server cooling details. A24 GB listing cannot qualify a delivered12 GB board. Save a recovery image for the validated legacy environment before changing the host driver or operating system.

## A concrete qualification scenario

A lab receives two M40 cards without reliable capacity labels. Enumerate each separately and establish a small common model/context control. Explore a larger artifact only as an additional24 GB case, not as a replacement for the control. Run a separate renderer reference scene with explicit denoising settings. The resulting matrix records both memory variants and the retained software path without pretending that larger memory removes Maxwell kernel limitations.

## The evidence to retain

Keep an ordinary qualification record with the actual test outputs.

Identify the tested variant, software build and execution mode before entering observations. Leave unavailable measurements explicitly unknown.

The fields below separate published specifications from observed allocation and job completion, so a later operator can repeat the same case.

| Evidence field | What this profile must retain |
|---|---|
| Hardware identity | NVIDIA Tesla M40; physical variant and reported device identifier |
| Memory boundary | 12/24 GB published; observed free memory before and after loading |
| Inference artifact | Exact weights digest, quantization, context and offload configuration |
| Render artifact | Scene digest, renderer version, backend and denoising setting |
| System envelope | Driver, container/build digest, enclosure and cooling configuration |
| Completion evidence | Application exit status, output validity and observed memory failures |

A delivered12 GB M40 must not inherit a 24 GB artifact assignment solely from the old inventory label or the shared cooler appearance.
