A server suitable for text chat is not automatically ready for images or other input types. Preparation, request sizes and computation change. Owners should evaluate a concrete multimodal task rather than promise support for every format.

## Fix the supported input

Choose an exact model and input type, such as images, video or another supported format. Record size, object-count and message-structure restrictions. One model's capabilities do not apply to its entire family.

[vLLM documents multimodal inputs](https://docs.vllm.ai/en/stable/features/multimodal_inputs/), while [Hugging Face describes multimodal chat templates](https://huggingface.co/docs/transformers/main/en/chat_templating_multimodal). The latter uses the main branch, so fix a compatible version for the pilot. Format support begins the check; users still need useful results on their data.

## Separate preparation and execution

File retrieval, decoding, representation changes and model execution can use different resources. Host RAM and CPU matter alongside VRAM. In an illustrative image-description service, measure transfer, preparation and generation separately. Replacing a GPU may not improve the full response if uploading dominates.

Preserve temporary-file locations and cleanup rules. Large inputs can consume disk and RAM before the model call begins.

## Build a complexity matrix

Prepare permitted input sizes and types with known expected results. For images, include embedded text, several objects and a question about a particular detail. Different files are not equivalent workloads merely because their compressed sizes match; the model's processing determines representation and complexity.

At each level, test individual and mixed traffic. Distinguish preparation failures from generation failures so aggregate success does not conceal lost inputs.

## Test service boundaries

Define rejection of unsupported or oversized inputs before they reach a working node's memory limit. Predictable refusal is preferable to accidental exhaustion. Use synthetic or permitted images for preliminary comparisons rather than confidential material without agreed handling.

Include restart and cancellation. Resource release needs a verified procedure, not an assumption from one completed example. Where supported, preserve a request containing several objects. It may differ from several independent calls in preparation and memory. Count and size limits belong to the tested configuration, not just the upload form.

## Assessing a multimodal configuration

Describe GPU, VRAM, CPU, RAM, disks and connection. Show funders the complete-cycle budget, including input transfer and preparation. Scenarios are considered after assessment; support for every multimodal task is not announced in advance.
