For teams already managing API infrastructure, model calls become another controlled traffic type. Kong AI Gateway places access, policies and observation within that architecture. This differs from choosing a model catalog simply for one convenient user key.

Documentation checked on November 1, 2026 describes Konnect and self-hosted options. Verify edition, features and licensing for the selected product rather than inferring them from gateway alone.

## Define the governance task

[Kong AI Gateway](https://developer.konghq.com/ai-gateway/) describes connectivity and governance for AI systems. Identify rules to centralize: team access, allowed models, traffic limits or request observation. Another infrastructure layer may be excessive for one application calling one model.

With several teams and models, compare maintaining separate integrations with operating a common gateway. The decision depends on scale and existing procedures, not an assumption that centralization is always advantageous.

## Separate control and traffic processing

The documentation distinguishes control plane and data plane. Locate both, assign operators and record external links. Hosting one component yourself does not place the entire system within your site.

Map authentication, configuration, request processing and logs, including ownership and availability needs. This shows how a supporting component's failure affects an already operating route rather than testing only the positive case.

## Test policies across teams

Suppose a product team can use a broad catalog while an internal system uses approved targets only. Create corresponding test roles and check permitted and forbidden requests under ordinary operation and executor failure.

Verify user identity accounting separately. If every request appears under one application key, reporting may lack the required operational and financial detail. Define that detail without unnecessarily retaining request content.

## Check the product edition

The [official role-based budget example](https://developer.konghq.com/ai-gateway/set-up-kong-identity-for-tiered-ai-budgets/) supports a concrete access-separation test. Confirm version, environment requirements and licensed functions for the selected edition. Managed features do not automatically transfer to every local installation.

Test configuration updates, rollback and primary-model unavailability. These events reveal operating suitability. One successful request answers only basic connectivity, not the team's maintenance and resilience requirements.

## Connection to GPU-pool economics

Inbound traffic governance can help an infrastructure operator but does not create demand by itself. This overview does not treat Kong as a confirmed channel automatically onboarding independent GPUs for sales.

Read the [self-hosted gateway comparison](/journal/top-self-hosted-ai-gateways/) and [total routing-layer cost](/journal/token-router-total-cost/) to refine the architecture.
