# Hetzner GPU pricing: include setup fees in a short pilot

Include Hetzner GPU setup fees in a short pilot using a complete-period formula, an explicitly hypothetical example and a clear working calendar.

For a short Hetzner GPU pilot, include any setup fee alongside recurring rental and additional resources. If the selected offer contains that one-off charge, omitting it produces a misleading comparison with hourly compute. A short session's total and a long-running rate answer different questions.

## Save the exact order terms

Record configuration name, billing period, one-off charge and included resources from the selected GPU offer. Values from another model or an expired promotion do not describe the planned order.

Read the current billing and cancellation rules separately. A rate calculated for your internal comparison does not create a contractual right to purchase an arbitrary fraction of a month. Label the calculation horizon and the actual charging period clearly.

## Use a transparent formula

Let S be the setup fee, R the recurring charge for the relevant interval and A the additions. The interval budget is `S + R + A`. Divide by useful working hours H only when that is the metric you intend to compare.

This shows how a one-off expense is distributed within the project. It does not claim the supplier bills only those useful hours. Keep preparation, waiting and useful computation visible so a colleague can interpret the number correctly.

## Work through a hypothetical example

Suppose S is 100 accounting units and the same recurring interval costs 300, with no additions. At 20 useful hours the total works out to 20 units per useful hour. At 100 hours it is four.

| Useful work | Hypothetical total | Per useful hour |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 20 hours | 400 units | 20 units |
| 100 hours | 400 units | 4 units |

These invented numbers explain the arithmetic; they are not Hetzner prices. They show the effect of utilisation without proving that a longer rental always beats another product.

## Add preparation and exit work

OS, driver and application setup use the team's working window. Decide whether those hours count as useful work or preparation, and apply the same definition to alternatives. Include export and the time the server remains ordered after computation ends.

Make a calendar with order date, setup completion, working sessions and cancellation. A prepared image may change the next experiment's effort, but measure that rather than assigning an assumed saving. Compare the same task, data and availability requirement, then preserve the source and date of rates in the calculation.

## Turn the check into a practical next step

Spread a one-off setup cost across the actual useful work when comparing alternatives. Your calculated hourly figure does not change the provider’s billing terms.
