# Granite 4.2 in Russian: test beyond the published language list

Evaluate Granite 4.2 for Russian text without treating its published tested-language list as either a guarantee of accuracy or proof of impossibility.

Granite 4.2-8B publishes a tested-language list that does not include Russian. This is a boundary on the published evidence, not proof that every Russian request must fail.

## Read the language statement precisely

The [model card](https://huggingface.co/ibm-granite/granite-4.2-8b/raw/main/README.md) lists English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Arabic, Czech, Italian, Korean, Dutch and Chinese as tested languages. It says other languages may work but have not been fully tested.

The [IBM technical article](https://huggingface.co/blog/ibm-granite/granite-4-2) and [official repository](https://github.com/ibm-granite/granite-4.2-language-models) provide model and usage context. A multilingual tag should not override the more specific tested-language statement, and the absence of Russian should not be rewritten as a categorical execution restriction.

## Define what Russian support means for the task

A model may produce fluent Russian while mishandling technical negation, terminology or factual scope. Decide which behavior the application needs before evaluating general fluency.

Use fictional engineering notices with fixed component names, a prohibition and an exception. Include code explanations where the reference behavior can be checked from the implementation. Avoid knowledge questions whose answer cannot be independently verified.

A successful greeting response is insufficient evidence for accepting technical instructions.

## Build paired Russian and English fixtures

| Fixture | Evidence to compare |
| --- | --- |
| Equivalent instructions | Same required facts and restrictions |
| Negation | Prohibited behavior is not endorsed |
| Exception | The exceptional case remains limited |
| Technical term | Declared terminology stays consistent |
| Code explanation | Meaning matches the supplied implementation |

Review the translations before generation. If the Russian prompt accidentally changes the condition, a language comparison is invalid regardless of the model's response.

## Report failures at the correct level

A grammatical error, incorrect fact and missed instruction are different outcomes. A response can be natural and still invert a prohibition. It can also be awkward but technically correct.

If the answer is truncated, preserve that as incomplete output rather than a completed language error. If the prompt is too long for the actual runtime setting, correct the input condition before drawing a conclusion about Russian ability.

## Keep the conclusion narrower than the language label

Store exact model and template revisions, prompt pairs, reference facts and generation settings. Report Russian and English results separately, including uncertain or unresolved cases.

The evidence can justify use for a bounded Russian workflow or show that the chosen task remains unsuitable. It cannot establish full Russian-language support across domains, dialects and writing styles. Nor can a small successful set erase the publisher's stated testing boundary. The useful decision combines honest source coverage with direct acceptance of the actual Russian text work the application requires.
