# Demand before GPUs: evidence to gather before purchasing

Validate a GPU pool’s commercial hypothesis before expansion: user scenarios, service requirements, pilot measurements and evidence for the next funding stage.

AI's popularity does not explain which workload a new GPU pool will serve. Buyers choose an outcome: an appropriate model, quality, functions and service conditions. Hardware enables that outcome but does not automatically create the need.

Funding demand validation can be useful before expanding the fleet. The objective is evidence for the next configuration and its scale, rather than proof of an optimistic forecast selected in advance.

## Name the user and task

Describe why a person or organisation needs inference: short conversations, document processing, code generation or another scenario. List language, context, response format, tools, latency and data restrictions.

This profile rejects unsuitable ideas before procurement. A server can perform one task well and be inappropriate for another. Even with the same model name, the actual request mix can materially change the technical result.

## Distinguish the strength of evidence

General technological interest is useful research evidence, but not an order. Discussion of a specific workload provides more information. An agreed evaluation with measurable criteria tests service suitability. Commercial commitments require their own confirmation and precise terms.

Do not convert meeting counts into future revenue. For each proposed scenario, separately record what is known about the need, what remains to be tested and who makes the user's decision.

## Run a pilot on an available resource

If a suitable GPU can already be supplied by an owner or rented for evaluation, an initial purchase is not always necessary. Start with a reproducible test and identify what prevents the selected need from being met.

[FinOps Forecasting](https://www.finops.org/framework/capabilities/forecasting/) connects forecasts to inputs and regular updates. For a new pool, we suggest making user profile, expected use and expenses explicit. New information should change the calculation, not merely its accompanying explanation.

## Do not mistake a sales channel for demand

A platform can simplify API access while retaining its own provider selection and routing rules. [OpenRouter publishes its provider onboarding process](https://openrouter.ai/providers/apply).

In a hypothetical case, a model passes the technical pilot but demand for its particular variant remains unconfirmed. Testing a user scenario may be the next useful expense, rather than buying several more identically configured nodes.

## Define the basis for expansion

Before validation, identify what the next decision will require: user-test results, confirmed limits of the current resource and a revised budget. There is no universal threshold for every GPU project.
