A managed LLM gateway can use service credentials or the customer's own provider credentials, commonly called BYOK. This changes billing sources, account limits and access responsibility as well as authentication.

Official sources were checked on November 1, 2026. There is no single recommendation for every team. Make payment observable and compare equivalent workloads and capabilities.

## Draw both payment paths

[Hugging Face Pricing and Billing](https://huggingface.co/docs/inference-providers/pricing) explicitly distinguishes routed calls and customer provider keys. A common interface does not imply one invoice source. Record who bills each component in your architecture.

If supplier-specific agreements apply, verify they remain applicable through the gateway. Successful authentication does not establish prices, credits or additional-feature terms; confirm these separately for the selected path.

## Assign key and limit ownership

[Requesty BYOK](https://docs.requesty.ai/features/bring-your-own-keys) documents customer credentials in policy. Identify who adds keys, changes their use and revokes access. These rights should match budget responsibility.

A provider-account key and a team gateway key belong to different layers. One layer's limit may not replace another's. Test allowed models, exceeded limits and direct-bypass restrictions where the architecture requires them. A centralized interface alone does not prove every request follows the central control.

## Test backup credentials

[Vercel Authentication & BYOK](https://vercel.com/docs/ai-gateway/authentication-and-byok) provides another product-specific mechanism. Check credential priority and failure behavior for each selected service rather than transferring one platform's rules to all gateways.

Suppose the primary BYOK key reaches a limit and routing switches to managed credentials. The request can succeed while moving expense elsewhere. Reporting must preserve the billing path, not just model name, so that a successful fallback does not conceal a changed budget source.

## Compare costs and operating actions

Use ordinary, long and interrupted control requests. Reconcile usage, gateway estimates and available supplier charges. Check additional fees and plan conditions on the decision date.

Include account management, invoice reconciliation, key rotation and diagnosis. Unified billing may reduce work; BYOK may preserve particular controls. Evaluate your process rather than compressing everything into one universal percentage. Define credential replacement when an employee leaves or a project ends. Revoking access while retaining understandable expense history is an operating requirement as well as security configuration.

## Meaning for an owned GPU service

BYOK is a client-access mechanism, not proof that an arbitrary gateway can sell resources from your card.
