Check Azure GPU deployment permission through Total Regional vCPUs, the selected VM-family quota and current subscription usage before diagnosing capacity.

An Azure GPU VM can meet one quota and fail another: Total Regional vCPUs and the quota for its VM size family are separate checks. Verify both for the intended subscription and region. A large overall balance does not prove the selected accelerator family is permitted.

## Identify the exact scope

Record subscription, region, VM size and count. One subscription's allowance is not automatically available to another. Inspect Usage + quotas or the documented interface for current consumption.

Other projects may already use part of the total. Also review how allocated and deallocated resources are counted for quota: turning a guest operating system off is not a universal way to release every kind of permission. Preserve the actual resources behind the usage figure.

## Keep quota and capacity distinct

| Check | Purpose |
| --- | --- |
| Total Regional vCPUs | Overall regional permission |
| VM-family vCPUs | Permission for the selected family |
| VM count | Separate resource-count restriction |
| Physical capacity | Ability to allocate equipment now |

A quota increase does not create available GPUs. An allocation failure needs its own diagnostic route, rather than another identical request to a sufficient quota category.

## Request the planned maximum

Calculate the selected size's vCPUs and total intended parallelism, including current usage. State the desired final value, purpose and operating period. A bounded pilot should have a clear resource plan and completion procedure.

Do not request a large number solely because a field accepts it. Permission does not establish budget or useful utilisation. Coordinate the expected simultaneous tasks and preserve their owners so unnecessary resources can be identified without interrupting another team's work.

## Diagnose a second VM request

A research group may have enough family allowance for a new GPU VM but too little total regional allowance because CPU projects already consume it. The reverse can also occur: overall room exists while the accelerator family is restricted.

Save the exact error and the quota row checked. After approval, test actual allocation; creation, restart and resizing can still face physical availability constraints. Keep the approved values, occupied amount and successfully created resources distinct in the record. Refresh that inventory before the next pilot, with an owner responsible for the shared view rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Give the shared inventory a named owner, so the next quota request reflects current machines rather than a collection of outdated screenshots.

## Turn the check into a practical next step

A launch needs both sufficient regional permission and the relevant family quota. Approval does not reserve physical equipment in the target region or zone.
